  3. Harlequin

    Matteo Bini / Foreign Language / Italy / 2014 / 90 mins
Winner of the Prix du Public at Les Rencontres du Cinéma Italien at Toulouse, "Harlequin" is an engrossing, entertainingly charming new Italian film about rediscovering what’s important in life. Matinee idol Paolo Milesi has it all: looks, women, money, his own popular daytime TV show. But his perfect world begins to crumble when his aging, estranged father — like Paolo, an actor, though with a classical theater troupe rather than a TV network — is reported to be in critical health. Paolo rushes to his home town only to find the old actor stubbornly rehearsing to perform his beloved Commedia dell’Arte character Harlequin, a soulful, miming clown, one last time. As the old wounds of their difficult relationship are reopened, the magical world of Commedia dell’Arte begins to seduce Paolo, and make him question his own superficial existence.

  4. Hitchcock/Truffaut

    Kent Jones / Documentary / France, United States / 2015 / 80 mins
In 1962 Hitchcock and Truffaut locked themselves away in Hollywood for a week to excavate the secrets behind the mise-en-scène in cinema. Based on the original recordings of this meeting — used to produce the mythical book "Hitchcock/Truffaut" — this film illustrates the greatest cinema lesson of all time and plummets us into the world of the creator of "Psycho", "The Birds", and "Vertigo". Hitchcock’s incredibly modern art is elucidated and explained by today’s leading filmmakers: Martin Scorsese, David Fincher, Arnaud Desplechin, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Wes Anderson, James Gray, Olivier Assayas, Richard Linklater, Peter Bogdanovich, and Paul Schrader.

  5. I Am Michael

    Justin Kelly / LGBT / United States / 2015 / 98 mins
“I Am Michael” is the incredible true-life story of Michael Glatze, a gay activist who enrolls in the Christian Bible Academy to become a pastor. The film follows Michael from his days of personal self-discovery to his life in San Francisco, where he pursues political activism, social awareness, and sexual exploration. After a traumatic scare, Michael begins to be plagued by doubt, paranoia, and fear about God, afterlife, and the path to Heaven or Hell. He suddenly renounces his gay lifestyle and rejects his friends. Dogmatic and single-minded, Michael seeks ‘salvation’ through the ways of the Bible. This dramatic change in belief alters the lives of everyone around him and makes them wonder what happened to Michael. This powerful new film captures one man’s haunting journey through modern concepts of love, denial, and redemption. Preceded by short film “Elder” (14 min).

    Ivy Meeropol / Documentary / Japan, United States / 2015 / 94 mins
Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant looms just 35 miles from Times Square. With over 50 million people living in close proximity to the aging facility, its continued operation has the support of the plant’s operators and the NRC — Nuclear Regulatory Commission — yet has stoked a great deal of controversy in the surrounding community, including a vocal anti-nuclear contingent concerned that what happened at Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant could happen here. In the brewing fight for clean energy and the catastrophic possibilities of government complacency, director Ivy Meeropol presents a balanced argument about the issues surrounding nuclear energy and offers a startling reality check for our uncertain nuclear future.

  8. Kilo Two Bravo

    Paul Katis / Narrative / Jordan, United Kingdom / 2014 / 108 mins
From debut feature director Paul Katis and writer Tom Williams (Chalet Girl) comes "Kilo Two Bravo", a portrait of a harrowing real life event in the midst of the Afghanistan conflict, and a modern British war film. The film depicts an incident involving a group of soldiers, mostly from the British Army’s 3rd Battalion, The Parachute Regiment (3 Para), who were trapped in a minefield while stationed at the Kajaki Dam in Afghanistan in 2006. A small unit of soldiers is dug into a ridge overlooking the dam. A three-man patrol sets out to disable a Taliban roadblock. In a dried out river bed at the foot of the ridge, one of the patrol detonates a land mine, blowing off his leg and setting into motion a desperate rescue mission. His fellow soldiers come to his aid, only to find themselves trapped in an unmarked minefield, a relic of the Russian invasion of the 1980s. With no way out, any movement risks certain injury and possible death. Out of this harrowing day came extraordinary tales of bravery, selflessness and heroism, but also tragic consequences, for leader Corporal Mark Wright and his comrades, who risked their own lives to help each other.

  9. King Georges with Appearances by Erika Frankel and Chef George Perrier

    Erika Frankel / Documentary / United States / 2015 / 80 mins
Philadelphia, circa 2010, is about to lose its culinary treasure: Le Bec-Fin, one of the finest French restaurants in the country. The 67-year-old owner, Georges Perrier, nearly as iconic as his landmark eatery, is preparing to sell the restaurant after more than four decades in business. Filmmaker Erika Frankel, a native of the Philly suburbs, asks if she could film Perrier as an era-ending tribute. Perrier, however, has other plans. He decides to withdraw the sale and reinvent Le Bec-Fin by hiring a new protégé, Chef Nicholas Elmi, who achieved national fame on the “Top Chef” TV show. Perrier wants to pass the business to Elmi, but finds he has trouble letting go of the spatula. Over a three-year period, Frankel captures this mercurial, passionate, quixotic force of nature as he struggles to preserve his sumptuous Gallic dishes in an era where casual attitudes and lighter fare are taking hold. Spiced with archival footage and interviews from world-renowned chefs, such as Thomas Keller, Daniel Boulud, and Eric Ripert, "King Georges" is a feast for the eyes, as well as a touching portrait of a master artist in the twilight of his career who realizes he is still hungry for seconds.

    Trey Edward Shults / Narrative / United States / 2015 / 83 mins
Winner of both the Grand Jury and Audience Awards at the 2015 South-by-Southwest Film Festival, and official selection of Critics’ Week at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, "Krisha" is the story of a woman’s return to the family she abandoned years before, set entirely over the course of one turbulent Thanksgiving. When Krisha shows up at her sister’s Texas home on Thanksgiving morning, her close and extended family greet her with a mixture of warmth and wariness. Almost immediately, a palpable unease permeates the air, one which only grows in force as Krisha gets to work cooking the turkey and trying to make up for lost time by catching up with her various relatives, chief among them her nephew, Trey. As Krisha's attempts at reconciliation become increasingly rebuffed, tension and suspicion reach their peak, with long-buried secrets and deep-seated resentments coming to the fore as everyone becomes immersed in an emotionally charged familial reckoning.
